Thinking About Adoption?
Adoption is not giving up. It’s an opportunity for you to place your child in a loving home with a family who can support them. We all face challenges in our lives, and an unplanned pregnancy can be tough. You could be facing circumstances in your life that make you feel like you’re not ready to raise a child, and that’s ok. Explore this option by understanding the different types of adoption and which one could be a fit for you. You can still have an ongoing relationship with your child as they grow up if you desire to.
Is Adoption Right For Me?
Whether you’re facing financial strain, relational issues, personal issues, etc., and you don’t want to abort. Adoption may be the choice for you. Here is what you will want to know about the types of adoption and how they work long term. The adoption process has changed dramatically over the years, allowing the birth mom to call the shots in the process.
Types of Adoption
Open Adoption
Open adoption is the most common type of adoption these days. It gives both the parent and adoptive family access to communicate, set up visit times, and create a great open relationship between everyone. This looks like phone calls, emails, and in-person visits when agreed on between both parties. With open adoption, the birth mom gets to decide on the adoptive family and who is the best fit.
Closed Adoption
A closed adoption is where little to no contact is made between the birth mom, adoptive family, and the child. Though this type of adoption is rare, there are pros to this type. Closed adoption comes with some sense of emotional closure, privacy, and safety for the child if there are toxic relationships involved.
Semi-Open Adoption
This type of adoption is a mix of both open and closed adoption. Both the birth parents and adoptive parents share non-identifying information and an adoption agency will handle all communication between them. In other words, all contact is done through a third party. Birth parents choose semi-open adoption with the desire for less contact with their child but still some amount.
