Why the Abortion Pill Can Fail
The abortion pill uses two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end a pregnancy. Although the process is intended to end a pregnancy, an ongoing pregnancy is a known possible risk.
The FDA approves the use of the abortion pill through ten weeks of gestation. Taking these drugs beyond this timeframe could be a reason why you are still pregnant.
If you believe your pregnancy may be continuing, contact your healthcare provider for follow-up care. An examination, pregnancy testing, or ultrasound may be used to determine whether the pregnancy is continuing.
Adoption as Your Next Step
If you want to continue your pregnancy but do not feel prepared to become a parent, you can start to learn more about adoption.
Adoption involves making a plan for your child to be raised by another family. You will have the opportunity to choose an adoptive family based on your preferences and decide what level of contact you would like to have after placement.
You will not be expected to pay for adoption services, and some agencies may be able to cover certain pregnancy-related expenses. Crossroads PRC can connect you with reputable adoption agencies.
The three main types of adoption to consider are:
- Open adoption – Allows the birth parent, adoptive family, and child to maintain ongoing communication or contact according to an agreement between the parties. This may include phone calls, emails, letters, or in-person visits.
- Closed adoption – Involves no contact between the birth parent, adoptive family, and child after placement.
- Semi-open adoption – Allows some communication or sharing of information, often through an adoption agency or another third party.
