How Can I Recover Emotionally After An Abortion?

Abortion affects every woman differently, but if you’re feeling distressed following an abortion, know that you are not alone.

One study found that 75% of women who felt some pressure to have an abortion felt a variety of emotional symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, guilt, regret, and feelings of worthlessness or low self-esteem.

Crossroads provides no-cost post-abortive care from our peer counselors, who can help you feel supported during this difficult time. Schedule an appointment today.

Engaging In Self-Care Practices

One of the best things you can do is practice self-care.

The first thing you should do is allow yourself to feel. It’s normal to experience a wide range of emotions after an abortion. Let these emotions pass through you without judgment, whatever comes up.

Your physical and mental states are directly connected, so taking care of yourself is a great way to start the road to recovery. You can start simply by making sure you’re getting enough rest. Then, steadily increase into trying to eat healthy and getting physical activity.

You can also engage in relaxing activities. Things like reading, listening to music, taking a bath, or practicing yoga can help soothe your mind and reduce stress.

Seeking Support Systems

It’s okay to say no to activities or interactions that feel too demanding or stressful during this time. However, consider talking it out with others as a support system.

Speaking with a trusted friend, partner, or counselor about your feelings can be incredibly therapeutic. Even if you don’t want to talk about it, surrounding yourself with understanding friends, family, or support groups can provide comfort.

If you don’t feel like talking with your loved ones about it, that’s ok. That’s what we at Crossroads are here for. We provide a confidential and safe space for you to share your feelings without judgment.
