Am I Eligible?

Did you know that there are a variety of circumstances that would make you ineligible for an abortion? This would include if you:

  • Are too far along in your pregnancy.
  • Have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place.
  • Have a suspected pregnancy outside of the uterus. This is called ectopic pregnancy.
  • Have certain medical conditions. These include bleeding disorders; certain heart or blood vessel diseases; severe liver, kidney or lung disease; or an uncontrolled seizure disorder.
  • Take a blood thinner or certain steroid medicines.
  • Can’t make follow-up visits to your provider or don’t have access to emergency care.
  • Have an allergy to the medicine used.

Aside from all these situations, to be eligible for an abortion, you must first confirm your pregnancy.

Confirm Your Pregnancy

An at-home test isn’t enough to confirm if you’re pregnant. Getting a lab-quality pregnancy test and an ultrasound is essential to getting key details about your specific situation.

For instance, 26% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, for which an abortion procedure wouldn’t be the right solution. An ultrasound is essential to determining a pregnancy’s viability.

Ultrasounds also tell you how far along you are (gestational age) and check to make sure the pregnancy is safely located in the uterus.
