what are the different types of abortion?

Medical abortion

Medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill method, uses two medications to terminate a pregnancy. Women under 10 weeks pregnant are eligible for this abortion procedure, following confirmation of pregnancy through a pregnancy test and ultrasound. Both abortion pills are prescribed by a doctor or clinic that provides abortion services.
The first pill, Mifepristone is used to block the progesterone hormone and thins the lining of the uterus to prevent the embryo from growing or implanting. The second abortion pill, Misoprostol then causes the uterus to contract and remove the pregnancy by expelling the embryo.
Surgical Abortion

There are two types of surgical abortion.  Suction Aspiration may generally be performed between 6 and 14 weeks from a woman’s last menstrual period. Suction is used to remove the pregnancy from the uterus with a plastic tube. Dilation and Evacuation (D & E) is generally performed from 15 weeks after a woman’s last menstrual period. This procedure is more involved and we are happy to help you understand more about this procedure during your appointment with us. During both of these procedures patients generally receive anesthesia.
